Power of a Praying Wife
Power of a Praying Wife Study Plan
Starting a consistent prayer habit is difficult because it is so silent and solitary. And the topic of prayer is so broad. You can pray about anything, at anytime. When a topic is too open it is more likely to overwhelm you. A lack of clarity or specifics will inevitably lead to a lack of action. It is difficult to make progress on any goal without something specific or concrete to hang on to.
If you are wanting to have better prayer habits, using a guide is a great place to start. The Power of a Praying Wife is an excellent book on its own, but made even better when you read it with someone who will hold you accountable. Reading this book with a friend will help you not only get to the end of the book, but stay consistent in your prayer life.
The reading guide (linked below) includes a week-by-week reading plan, accountability questions, and a reading tracker. This reading plan is designed to be completed over 33 weeks.
Why is this reading guide so long?
The book, Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian, is 31 chapters worth of prayers, plus an intro chapter. In this reading plan, the commitment per week is low, only two days worth of homework. Spacing this book out over a long period of time gives you the opportunity to give each prayer the attention it deserves. And also gives you time to reflect on the topic yourself.
Find a Friend
Find a friend to do this reading plan with. It will make it much easier to stay in it for the full plan. While it might feel intimidating, it is worth it to ask someone to follow this guide with you. It will grow your friendship, as well as your pray practice.
A Word of Caution: Protect your marriage. Do not allow your accountability time to turn into an opportunity to be overly critical of your husband. The purpose of the accountability questions is to stay true to your commitment in the reading plan, and to grow yourself. Accountability is not a hall pass to gossip. Be sure that you are taking the difficult things to God first before pulling a friend into it. This book also touches on some very difficult topics. If reading this book reveals that you are being hurt, are thinking about hurting yourself, or hurting someone else, do not keep that to yourself. Trust someone to share those hurts.
My Friend Quit: Keep showing up for yourself. And consider asking someone else to join you. Don’t allow the fact that they didn’t make it to the end with you to discourage your friendship. Everyone is in their own walk of faith. Keep praying for them and their marriage. Sometimes people just need an example of what showing up looks like for them to take those same steps. God sees what you are doing.
Make it Shorter
A reading plan that spans more than half a year might not be the right fit for everyone. If it is too long, you can turn this reading plan into a 6 or 8 week study. Start with week one, then choose 5-7 topics that are most important to you and your accountability partner currently.
How to use this Study Plan
You will need a copy of The Power of a Praying Wife, a journal (or your notes app), your Bible, and a favorite pen.
If you are in a group: Complete day one and two on your own time. Choose one person to be the assigned the leader role. Pick a day of the week to be your accountability day. The leader should ask the accountability question for that week together in person, or over group chat.
If you are doing this reading guide with two people: Complete the homework on your own time. Send your partner a text saying that you did the homework. After completing the homework, discuss the accountability question over text, or in person.
If you are doing a solo study: Follow the reading plan, and use the accountability questions as journalling prompts
