Misled - Book Review

Summary of MisLed by Allen Parr

Misled by Allen Parr is a Christian-based book about how to recognize and guard against deceptive teachings within the modern church. This highly detailed book has individual chapters for identifying specific theological distortions that lead believers astray. Parr also includes chapters on topics to help Christians navigate complex spiritual issues, such as: the trap of legalism, the prosperity gospel, and the misuse of spiritual gifts. Misled uniquely tackles the difficulties of spiritual deception from a practical, biblically sound perspective.

Each chapter opens with a fictional story that illustrates the principal addressed in the chapter. It lays out a clear real-world example that readers can relate to, helping the book stay grounded. Other books in this category can be challenging to read, but Misled is very approachable.

Misled will open the door to discussing topics that might never come up in your group otherwise. And gives your group a framework to work through the discussion.

What I Liked Best

This book was very approachable. Parr has a way of explaining his perspective that is easy to understand, and provides solid Biblical evidence to back it up. My small group really enjoyed the stories at the beginning of each chapter. We found that the narrative really helped us related to the content and better understand each topic.

Each chapter of this book is very focused on one single topic. This makes it easy for group members to keep up week to week, even if they miss in the middle.

I also really appreciated the opportunity to talk about things that our group would not have brought up on our own, such as: speaking in tongues, manifesting, and the permanence of salvation. In general, our group walked away feeling more confident in our faith.

This book was so good, it earned a spot on my “give away” shelf of books we keep on hand.

Some of my favorite quotes:

“The indwelling of the Spirit is when He becomes a resident, but the filling of the Spirit is when He becomes the president.” (page 12)

“Faith means placing your trust in the person of Christ and the promises of God as revealed in the Word of God.” (page 37)

“Another problem with manifesting is that we assume we know what’s best for us without consulting the God who knows all. Furthermore, while something may be right for us, the timing we have in mind may not be right. When we attempt to manifest something, we don’t consider God’s well or His timing. We consider only our own desires.” (page 78)

What I Didn’t Like

There wasn’t much I didn’t like. Anything that I could mention is so minor, it’s not worth fussing over.

Recommendation

Misled: 7 Lies That Distort the Gospel is good for any adult small group, mature high school group, or young adult group. It is especially good for a small group with a diverse church history. The topics covered in this book make it very good for groups who need to sync up on the basics of Christianity. Or for groups where the leader has noticed some worldly views sneaking into many discussions.
