Book of Deuteronomy - Theme Tracker

How to Use the Deuteronomy Theme Tracker

As you read Deuteronomy, look for the themes listed at the top of the chart. When you read a passage containing that theme, phrase, event, or person fill in the square for that chapter. If you want to create a stronger reference for yourself, you can write the number of the verse in which the theme appears.

What to Look For

Most of the themes in the chart are very obvious, and don’t require aid or explanation. However, there are a few that can be a little tricky to identify at first.

God’s Presence Comes Down

In these early books, God is described in many ways, but in Numbers it often includes the phrase “God’s Presence”. You may also see Him described as a cloud, a pillar of fire, or the glory of the Lord. For the purpose of this study exercise, God speaking to others is separated from Him appearing. God speaks a lot through out Numbers, but He doesn’t always take a physical form.

Israel Remembers God’s Faithfulness & Call to Faithfulness

The first part of Deuteronomy contains several sermons given by Moses. These sermons serve to prepare the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. Take note of how often Moses emphasizes keeping the faith and remembering what God has done.

Prophecy & Covenants

This theme is trying to capture moments when the Israelites are looking to the future. A covenant is a promise from God for the future. Sometimes that is the near future, and others it is a long off promise. The same is true of prophecies. Prophecies come from people inspired by the Spirit, rather than from God directly.
