Book of Romans in a Year
Book of Romans in a Year Bible Reading Plan
Spend one whole year reading just one book of the Bible: Romans. The book of Romans is one of Paul’s most structured and detailed letters about the gospel and unity within the church. There are many dozens of Bible-study rabbit holes to run down. Spending a whole year in this book allows you the freedom to deep-dive your studies, with plenty of time to keep up with small group readings.
How it is Structured
The Book of Romans in a Year reading plan paces out your reading to stretch over the whole year. Each week you will have three days of reading or study assignments. You will start with reading one whole chapter in a single sitting, followed by two weeks of studying that chapter. After studying and verse mapping the chapter, you will reread the chapter as a whole.
There are two grace weeks that you can use to catch up on your reading plan or take a break from Romans.
Some weeks will include readings from the Old Testament. Paul frequently quotes the Old Testament in Romans, and it is helpful to your study to read those quotations in their full context.
Before You Start Your Book of Romans Reading Plan
Starting a year-long reading plan can be a daunting task. It is very important that you take a moment before starting this plan to pray. The enemy will do everything in his power to stop you from spending regular time in the Word, especially as you are reading about Jesus. Ask God to stay with you as you walk through this reading plan. And talk to Him about why you are starting this reading plan.
It is helpful to write prayers like this down. If you journal, write it in your journal. Or, write out the prayer on a piece of letter paper, fold it up, and tape it inside of your bible.
Dear God,
Please give me strength and endurance to stay in Your Word this year. Use the Holy Spirit within me to guide me to the right resources as I study Romans in depth. Let these Words pull me into a deeper relationship with You. God, thank you for the never-ending gift of the Bible. You are still writing your story, and I am grateful to be a part of it.
In Your Name,
Amen
Tips for Success
Track Your Progress - Check off each day as you complete it.
Find a Resource - This reading plan is very study heavy. Use a study Bible, or commentary (such as The Enduring Word) to support your reading.
Write It Down - Record each day’s reading in your paper planner or digital calendar
Make a Plan - Think about your day and routines. Recognizing times that would be good to read your verse for the day in advance will help you stay on track. Choose something earlier in the day, so you can reflect on the verse through out your day.
Set an Alarm - If you plan on doing your reading at a specific time, set an alarm/reminder on your phone
Location Isn’t Important - A long, reflective early morning quiet time, while beautiful, is not realistic on a day to day basis. Doing any quiet time is better than doing no quiet time. Don’t be afraid to sneak it in while you are waiting in your car, when the oven is heating up, or right before you go to bed. Letting go of a specific idea of what quiet time should look like is part of how you make it a routine and not just a dream.

Study Resources
Enduring Word
Enduring Word is an online commentary available completely for free. You can also buy printed versions of this commentary, if you prefer print. This commentary breaks the scripture down line-by-line, giving historical context, theological explanations, and deeper understanding.
The Daily Study Bible Series by Barclay
Amazon Link: https://a.co/d/4QfMnhz
The Daily Study Bible Series is a book by book Bible commentary. This commentary is broken down into sections, not verse by verse like Enduring Word. It has some really great insights and feels almost like reading a sermon based on the section of Scripture.
Bible Hub
www.biblehub.com | biblehub.com/chaptersummaries/romans/1.htm
Bible Hub is a rich resource with lots of summaries, commentaries, and more. Start with the chapter summaries if you are unfamiliar with this site. It is worth giving some time to clicking around on all the different categories of information.
Study Bible
Amazon Link: https://a.co/d/aT0mIKz
You can use any study Bible. This is a Bible that has extra information printed in the book next to the Scriptures. Linked above is a good ESV study Bible if you are in the market. The information in a study Bible is going to be more limited than the other resources, but is an excellent place to start if you are new to this kind of study.
