Book of Job - Theme Tracking
Book of Job - Theme Tracker
How to Use the Job Theme Tracker
As you read Job, look for the themes listed at the top of the chart. When you read a passage containing that theme, phrase, event, or person fill in the square for that chapter. If you want to create a stronger reference for yourself, you can write the number of the verse in which the theme appears.
There are two blank spaces for you to write in your own themes you want to track.
What to Look For
The book of Job attempts to answer the question: “What is the purpose of suffering?” This is probably the most difficult question to wrestle with. As you read, tracking the various themes of Job will help you better understand God’s answer to this question.
Reasons for Suffering
There are multiple reasons given for Job’s suffering in this book. As you are reading, pay special attention to the people talking to Job and what they have to say about his suffering. Ask yourself if this person is speaking God’s truth, or just voicing their own human opinion not grounded in scripture. Look for the answer that reflects God’s perspective.
Job Praises God
This theme is attempting to track the times with Job recognizes God and His authority. Sometimes Job’s praise of God sounds like worship music, “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” Other times, Job still proclaims God’s power, but it is in bitterness, “If the Lord tears down, none can rebuild; if he shuts a man in, none can open.” Include both of these kinds of praise in your tracking.
